Still a lurker. Just purged old friends who haven't updated in years. Damn, time flies.

Latest book cover design set. "Dark Lord Seeks Friendship, Maybe More" was challenging. The novel is humourous anachronistic fantasy gay romance, I think its original cover captures its essence really. It's just not a very classy cover, so it was really interesting in trying to create a design that I thought balanced all the genres, while still being something I thought I could see on a shelf. The Magic Catalogue was easily pulled together in contrast, but it's much more straightforward, really!

PS. When author & reader collide: after using Goodreads one night to rate "The Sheriff of Yrnameer," a great humourous scifi novel, I was extremely startled in the morning to recieve a message from the author thanking me for reading his book. Whilst normally I would assume that this is an autoresponse and feel somewhat pleased to be recognised, in this case the author followed it up by also thanking me for introducing him to the term curtainfic, a tag I'd used on another book entirely. The internets, bringing people together! Man, I'm glad I gave it a good review though!

I was looking at book covers on The Book Cover Archive (here) for ideas, some of those covers are incredibly creative. You also realize how much they can be a product of their time as well, I mean this one just screams hipster. There's a website devoted just to cataloguing War of the Worlds covers (here) over the decades for anyone interested. They're all incredibly extensive and fascinating but not really illustrative of my earlier point, you can see many designs are torn between a completely modern take and paying homage so the passage of time isn't as visible.

Still having fun procastinating. These are in a more vintage style, fun! All That Matters by the way is like, 500 pages of slow burn lesbian curtainfic with strong mature female characters, just what I needed really. Other Things The Road To Hell Is Paved With is a Dresden Files 100k+ fic that I've been rereading on my Kindle, I loved the sense of things slotting together as I read, even as I know that in Book Two there will be trouble galore.

I've been having fun just grabbing stuff online and creating covers for ebooks that either didn't come with a cover, or which I had a severe dislike of the original. I use Calibre for my Kindle, so I prefer having pictures to look at while I'm organizing my Kindle. I tend to just grab pictures online without care of legality since this is just for personal use. They're not intense graphic works of art as it's a stress release more than anything else, but I'm quite fond of the Waiting For Godot cover I just made. I feel weirdest about making them for fics that I've downloaded though, I'm not quite sure why? There's this odd worry of stepping on toes. Anyways, just for kicks, here's the latest cover on the left, and the first cover I tried on the right.

It's weird, checking out my friendslist right now.
Normally I go on lj to escape life, and now I can't, because everyone is posting about help_japan, etc.
And y'know, that is really fucking awesome, fuck yeah fandom.

but uh, my sister lives in japan, y'know?
she's okay, in tokyo, she's just really fucking spooked, couldn't make it home for a while, was in a train when it hit and got a first hand experience about how people react in a small enclosed space when something like this happens. communication is sporadic, but there's been skyping and emails. but what's important is that she's okay.

but holy crap is it giving me anxiety attacks when people are showing the pictures of burning buildings an devastation.
it's effective in getting people to donate, i'm sure, but it's just massively fucking triggering for me just..... shut up shut up shut up shut up shut up I CAN'T DO ANYTHING OVER HERE, ALL I'M DOING IS WORRYING AND YOU'RE NOT HELPING.

but that's my problem, y'know. people are being helpful, and that's great. i just. i just can't deal with it right now. and i keep forgetting, so i check my friendslist or ontd and then surprise! shit.

yeah so i think i'm just gonna download ebooks and avoid lj for 2 weeks.

Y'know, archiveofourown's option to download files as mobi really makes me want to read epics, y'know, 100K+ fics.
I totally have "other things the road to hell is paved with" on my kindle, and I love it so.

Any one have recs? I'm pretty open to diff/new fandoms, just need a bit of a primer to get me going. I also like both gen and romance, so it's all good.
